Songwriter Andrew aims for a LIPA hat-trick

Partially sighted singer Andrew Coleman hopes to become the third LIPA student in a row to take home a prestigious songwriting award, judged by Guy Chambers and Cathy Dennis.

Liverpool-born Andrew is one of six talented young songwriters to be nominated for the fifth annual Musicians Benevolent Fund Songwriting Award taking place in London later this month.

The final year BA (Hons) Music student, who is registered blind, is following a great tradition of LIPA musicians following the nomination for his song Shaken.

Chart sensations The Wombats used victory in this competition as a springboard to success in 2005. While fast-rising R&B singer Hannah Rei was honoured as the winner last year and will perform at the event on November 27th.

It would be the fourth time in total a LIPA Music Student has won the award following Jez Wing’s success in 2003.

Andrew, 22, says: “Obviously I’d like to win and it’d be great to keep the award at LIPA for a third straight year. But, win or lose, I see this as a great opportunity to showcase my stuff to songwriting legends like Guy Chambers and Cathy Dennis. Just to have feedback on my music from professionals of that calibre will be a great honour for me.”

The Awards promote outstanding songwriters and the winner will receive £5,000 for a creative songwriting project. Universities and colleges from all over the UK have been nominating their most talented students for the Awards, which are open to songwriters studying on pop or commercial music degree courses.

It’s a busy month for Andrew, an active participant in local charity work, who is also shortlisted for the North West Disability Arts Forum Awards (DADA) Musician of the Year at the Crowne Plaza in Liverpool on November 29th.

The Musicians Benevolent Fund is the music business’s own charity - the largest of its kind in the UK. Each year it helps about 1,500 people of any age and in any area of the music business who are in need as a result of illness, accident or other misfortune and spends over £2 million on its benevolent work. The MBF also plays a significant role in education, fulfilling its remit to encourage the next generation of professional musicians. So far in 2007, more than 300 young people ranging from school age to those at the outset of their professional lives, have benefited from awards of more than £440,000. In addition, over £330,000 has been awarded to organisations which provide advanced training and performance opportunities to outstanding young musicians.

Singer songwriter Andrew Coleman goes International

Andrew met Mario Frangoulis in December 2004 when they both performed at The Royal Albert hall in a fundraising concert for the people of Darfur in the Sudan. Mario was so impressed with Andrew’s voice and the song he had written for the occasion. Mario asked Andrew to write some songs for him.

Recently Mario made contact with Andrew and invited him to Athens to sing at a fundraising concert for Aids orphans. Attending the concert were Paediatricians from all over the world who were at a conference discussing children’s medicine.

Andrew sang to a sell out audience of 4,000 people at the Badminton Theatre in Athens on August Bank Holiday Monday. Andrew performed 3 songs on the piano. The third song “Wounded Heart” was a song he had written for Mario and they performed it together as a duet.

Mario’s management team were so delighted with his performance they have invited Andrew to have his own concert in Cyprus and to sing again with Mario in future concerts around the world.

Andrews visit to Athens was during the time of the fires. After his performance Andrew paid a tribute to the Victims of the fires and the Fire and rescue teams.

Andrew has at least 10 more charity events in Liverpool before Christmas. Most of them are to raise money for children who were born with a medical problem as Andrew was. A spokesperson for Andrew said, “at last Andrew’s talent has been recognised”
